In honor of this hilarious article (warning: about college football) brought to my attention by jada, i thought we could start to develop our own set of standards for what it takes to be a real footy fan. I expect this to get out of control eventually, but it should be fun until then.
I'll get things started:
1. You must be a stated fan on one team. As American soccer fans, We recognize that it may take some time to really learn which team is right for you, so there will be no rushing of new fans. However, when your choice happens, it must be clear and must be adhered to. The longer the fan status for a particular team, the higher the fandom respect you recieve. Changing favorite teams is severely frowned upon.
1b. Up to 4 "soft spots" may be reserved for other teams. Soft spots for teams from other leagues are much preferred to competing teams.
2. You must agree that all diving and playacting is cheating and as such abhorrent, even if it comes from your own team. For example:
2b. celebrations following goals directly from cheating are allowed, but should be slightly muted if to be considered in good taste.

So....... basically what this is attempt to do is make James actually pick a team...... good idea. For the rest of us this should be easy.
JaDa...... I promise I won't rag on you if you pick Inter. I know that is who you really want to pick anyways.
Sim, this is like trying to tell an openly gay man in a parade to come out of the closet for you. We already know your high ranking level of gayness and what team you will pick first and foremost. It is never too late in my book. If you want to say Inter is your number one....... I promise I will only recieve you with open arms.
I have to think about my soft spots before I answer.
that wasn't exactly my point, but it'd be a nice bonus [grin].
rules 1 and 2 are just the start... add at will.
i've got another:
3. at least a couple times a year, you get up at 7:45 on a weekend for beerios and a game at the pub.
I don't understand....how did the "examples" you posted in that video actually apply? Those were heinous fouls against superior players. I felt like I was watching a goon in a hockey game mugging a player like Peter Forsberg!
I don't get it...
I'm cleary within the rules with Celtic, but nice attempt to soil this thread before it gets started.
My additions:
4) Any claim of gayness is valid up to one year.
4a) A claim of personal gayness is only refutable by heterosexual marriage, engagement, or your team winning their league, league cup, or champions league.
4b) A claim of team gayness is only refutable if you personally beat the antagonist in a shootout at City Park.
5) Primary international rooting interests must come from one of the following: place of birth, current place of residence if it extends beyond 2 years, former place of residence of more than 5 years.
5a) You may have up to two "grandfathered" international rooting interests that can come from the following: family heritage extending back as far as justifiable, family heritage through marriage, if your last name or maiden name sounds like it could have come from there, England.
5b) In the event that your primary international rooting interest and a grandfathered rooting interest square off you are required to leave all Azzurri attire in you closet and must not speak fondly of grandfathered team for the duration of the match.
5ba) You may never wear attire of two different countries at the same time. Ever.
5bb) Not even underneath your Italian jersey...
I've weighed in.
